Roast! - Chris O'Brien Part 2/2

Founder & Head Roaster at Coffee Cycle Roasting

AN INTERVIEW WITH CHRIS O’BRIEN PART 2

It’s funny how connected the coffee community is. When I booked Jimmy Silva from Jaunt Coffee Roasters on the show earlier this season, I didn’t know he and Chris were friends, much less had a roasting relationship, and you can tell from our chat that Chris didn’t know I knew Jimmy from the show!

I’ll keep saying it over and over and over again: Coffee is about community, and with Coffee Cycle, Chris is bringing together his shared communities of cyclists and coffee lovers and the local community.

On the show Chris is drinking the Colombia Hacienda El Obraje Colibri Gesha Blend he roasted. Click the link and try it for yourself.

Moving forward he’s looking to connect his communities even further out into the world with more direct trade, more interactive events, and more engagement.

I hope you enjoyed part 2 of this interview.

FROM THE SHOW

  • Cortado: The cortado is Chris’ go-to drink to order when he goes to someone else’s shop. The cortado is a Spanish drink from the Basque region of Spain that is an espresso layered with warm/steamed milk in a 1:1 ratio (instead of 1:3 for a latte). In some U.S. cafe’s the cortado is also called a Gibraltar, which is a reference to they type of Libby brand glassware it is commonly served in.

  • Five Faces of Soledad Ride took off recently from Coffee Cycle. A crew of insane riders showed up on Thanksgiving morning for a challenging ride up and down Mount Soledad not once, not twice, not thrice, not four times, but FIVE TIMES.

Cyclists have been supporting Coffee Cycle Roasting from the beginning. Below are cyclists showing up at the cart on the side of the road and again during the first week of business at the cafe in Pacific Beach, San Diego. More photos on @coffeecycleroasting on Instagram.

  • The tabletop sample drum roaster that Chris learned on: The Quest M3.

  • The farm/cafe that Coffee Cycle Roasting has been building a direct relationship with in Costa Rica is Café Corazón. The next step is to start building even more direct trade relationships with farms in the coffee belt around the world.
