R!WC is on a quasi-holiday until Season 4 drops in February 2022, but I didn’t feel right leaving you completely coffee content free. Until then, I'll be checking in once a week with some coffee news, show updates, mini-interviews at coffee shops, and Coffee Smarter throwbacks. Mostly, I need to brush up on all we've learned over the past three seasons so I’m in shape for an epic Season 4.
This week we go all the way back to weeks two and three of Season 1. It was a simpler time…sort of. I would meet the guests on Google Meet video chats and record the audio from that with an app on my phone. I’d then export the audio into a different software to try to learn the basics of audio editing.
For this first classics episode, Chris O’Brien of Coffee Cycle and I talk first about the ins and outs of water. Then we roll right into a chat about coffee flavors and flavor profiles.
COFFEE STUFF
Buffalo Starbuck’s Unionizes. It is a first time a U.S.-based Starbuck’s store has voted to unionize in the company’s 50-year history. Two stores in Canada have previously unionized. There are more than 33,000 stores worldwide.
Two Buffalo stores voted to unionize and one voted no. However, three more Buffalo area stores are holding elections, as are two in Boston and one in Mesa, AZ despite employees alleging union-busting intimidation efforts (per a report on CNBC) from the company trying to prevent unionization.Cropster: As much as I love the tactile creation of a cup of coffee it would be short-sighted to ignore how much technology has infiltrated the coffee industry. Cropster is one of the software programs some of our favorite coffee roasters are using to do everything from creating and tracking roast profile data to inventory management. I’m still learning about it myself, but wanted to share the link in case anyone wanted to go on a deep dive on some software over the holidays.
California has the most coffee shops of any state with 9615 per the World Coffee index survey which tracks the price of coffee around the world. The U.S. survey has a lot of fun data to peruse here.
