KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THE PODCAST

  • From an early age, we are all looking for our community, a place we belong, a place where we can love and be passionate about the things in our life that bring us joy, like, umm, coffee. Addison’s journey started in Florida, and as the things that mattered to them felt imperiled, they sought out a new community. They found it in the coffee people of Atlanta, GA, and at Perc Coffee, in particular.

  • Addison found inspiration and validation in a niche corner of coffee, which is competition. Specialty coffee is only a small portion of the overall coffee industry. Competition is a smaller community still.

Left: A barista in a white tee, brown cap, and with tattoos on their arm pours coffee into a mug. Right: A blond person wearing glasses smiles at the camera while balancing a coffee cocktail in a glass on their head.

  • I asked Addison before the show if it was okay that we addressed their challenges with Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS) and if we could talk about trans representation in coffee. There may be a time when disabilities or race or gender and sexuality aren’t talking points in a conversation like this, not because they are topics we avoid or ignore but because we’ve moved beyond those as stopping points in how we see each other as human beings.

  • Addison’s 1st coffee shop experience was in Florida called the Bold Bean. They fell in love with the space of coffee before they fell in love with the coffee itself.

  • I meet a lot of coffee people who have studied psychology. I wonder what that is about.

  • Hey! Remember the pandemic? Things got weird for Addison (and me). Probably, you, too.

  • Addison Mathis was inspired by watching Lem Butler’s World Barista Championship Finals performance, which is available on Youtube!

  • All the drinks for competition are built around the scoresheet. It is intense. It covers station set-up, espresso preparation, milk beverage evaluation, signature drink evaluation, and technical skills.

  • Sadly, we didn’t make it to Atlanta this summer as planned. We hit a deer in Wisconsin and rerouted back to SoCal for repairs. Shout out to Yach’s Body & Custom in Wisconsin for putting the ‘Ruka back together enough to drive across the country. The deer popped up and ran away after, so we hope they’re doing alright wherever they may be.

  • The movie The Lake House with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock as a concept is literally batshit crazy. It combines time travel, falling in love, and writing letters to get left in a mailbox. This does not get made today.
