Every door we came to, people would open up, to some extent, and share what they had. And it was really incredible. We did some legwork, but people shared their legwork with us, which is, really…if we have any modicum of success, it’s because people were willing to share.

The Bellwether 2 roasting machine enables TPCC to share the roasting experience with the Wausau community.

KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THE PODCAST

  • There are CoFounders! Shout out to Andrea and Daniel Tyler.

  • Nolan’s 1st coffee memory is tied to the smell the coffee aisle at the local grocery store.

  • The coffee community of Grand Rapids Michigan welcomed him in, offering up an opportunity to take the next step from drinking to learning and appreciating.

  • He focused his learning with Espresso Tuesdays, a meet-up group where he and other aficionados would taste and discuss espresso shots from their local cafes. Eventually, the focus turned to the other aspects of coffee, including the physical space, the hospitality experience, and the business aspects that might impact the cost of their Tuesday morning shots.

  • Other coffee roasters and cafes opened their arms, books, and even offered training experiences to Nolan and The Pinery team. They shared their coffee knowledge despite the fact that The Pinery Coffee Company would be a future competitor. That, to me, is what the coffee community is about.

  • Adding the Bellwether Series 2 Roasting machine allowed them to be more proactive in sharing stories and educating the community on the craft of coffee. Not to mention, it gave them more control over the product going out.

A six-foot tall electric roasting machine that looks like a Tesla vending machine is pushed against a wall featuring pine trees on the wallpaper. To the right, a coffee roasters looks off into the distance.
Nolan ponders the future next to the Bellwether Coffee roasting machine.
  • As a manager, developing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is only part of the challenge. You also need to be able to communicate your vision, and offer your team opportunities to adapt to real world cafe scenarios.

  • Feedback from their customers is essential to the continued growth of The Pinery in the Wausau, WI community.

  • The A Little Hope In Every Cup effort continues. In September The Pinery Coffee Company will be donating to The Neighbor’s Place in Marathon County to help provide food and clothing to those in need.

  • Bike Polo is badass. Think field hockey with a croquet mallet, but…on a bike.
