Last week I sent you an e-mail that the podcast talking about coffee processing was out, but I was jumping the gun. I hope you enjoyed the show about how water impacts your cup of coffee. That show about coffee processing is on the calendar for later this season.
But this week I ask Chris O’Brien, founder of Coffee Cycle & my own personal coffee sensei about the flavor wheel. He talks us through some of the basics, and we chat about drinking coffee with a mindful intention towards tasting. Stream the show here or click the link to your favorite podcast platform below.
This is one of my favorite coffee wheels which was published by Counter Culture Coffee in 2013. Coffee wheels are constantly evolving as more flavors become common or identified in coffee. There are more flavors than can be truly put into a single wheel, but this is one I use when trying a new coffee. The next time you have a cup try to note to yourself what flavors you are sipping, and identify the bigger categories they might fall into on the wheel at the middle.
For example you might taste a sweet flavor. Try to identify if it is fruity sweetness or sugary and sweet. If it is more fruit like, then is it more berry or more citrus, and so on. Good luck!
Coffee Cycle, is a fantastic coffee shop in Pacific Beach, San Diego, and Chris is one of the smarter coffee people I’ve ever had the chance to be around. He has graciously agreed to answer my questions about coffee (sometimes for the third or even fourth time) every week during Season 1 of Roast! West Coast. Check back for Coffee Smarter segments every Friday.
Thanks for reading, listening and sharing Roast! West Coast, and be sure to drink good coffee.
