“I think it [dark roast] is a little bit of a lost art.”
Jack Quint, Deltina Coffee Roasters
How do we choose where to live? Is it for the job? Family? Community? Lifestyle? How do we weigh those pillars against each other, and how does being an entrepreneur impact those choices?
I ended up in Southern California, but it took growing up in Wisconsin and stints in New York, Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Los Angeles to get here. It wasn’t just the relative warmth the coast offered but a job offer (for my wife), our housing opportunities, family influence, and so much more.
For the podcast, today’s interviewee Jack Quint was sitting outside his roastery. It was a brilliant morning. During the video chat, the foggy marine layer broke, and a ray of sunshine illuminated the metal wall behind him. That it was during a particularly passionate monologue about the coffee he’s chosen to roast didn’t seem accidental. I’m not a big believer in fate, but…maybe…maybe.
There aren’t a lot of hard and fast rules about the path we take in our careers and life despite what social norms, family, or our own preconceptions may lead us to believe. The point being is that Jack seems to be right where he’s meant to be—roasting coffee for the community of Oceano and those who find themselves on the coast of California.
FROM THE SHOW
I mentioned that Jack is the second Chicago-based CPA turned coffee roaster to join the podcast. The first was Taylor Fields, founder of Nostalgia Coffee Roasters. Taylor started Nostalgia Coffee as a coffee truck, but this week, she opened the company's first brick & mortar location in the Sorrento Valley area of San Diego. That interview with Taylor was one of my favorites that season. She opened up about a wide range of topics, including the impacts of being an entrepreneur on a relationship, being a woman in business, and the fear of giving up stability for a passion. If you missed it then or are looking for some inspiration now, I highly recommend you check it out. Check it out here:
