Nick & Ryan Drink Coffee
We have our regular coffee chat with Nick Schmitt of Roastar.
Nick Schmitt is the Specialty Coffee Ambassador at Roastar, Inc. We regularly catch up for a cup of coffee, so we decided to start recording our chats. Check back each month as we catch up on what’s new.
NOTES FROM THE SHOW
I’m a big fan of books. I’ve published a few, but none as coffee-centric as Jessica Easto’s How To Taste Coffee or Craft Coffee: A Manual, both of which are on the shelf behind me during my chat with Nick.
It was Greg Peters, VP of Operations at Talitha Coffee in San Diego who taught me about the miracle fabric that is Merino wool. For that, if nothing else, I owe him a debt of gratitude that will continue in perpetuity. I’m wearing Merino wool Glerup slippers right now.
Check out Protect Our Winters (POW) to learn more about how they are advocating for policy solutions to tackle the climate crisis. They have a pretty interesting article on green banking on their homepage right now.
Boon Boona Coffee (Seattle) is where Nick stopped to experience an East African coffee ceremony.
The train passes my apartment about three times an hour during peak times. It makes the lack of train whistles in my podcast fairly impressive if I do say so myself.
I like naming things. Our dog’s given name is Vaquito Whiskey Lemon Thundernuts Woldt-Hankes IV, or Quito, for short.
Eating alone in a restaurant is one of my great joys. I’ll bring a book or a notebook to sketch in. I prefer to sit at the bar, which offers the opportunity to socialize if I’d like. Even when my wife and I go out together, we prefer the bar. Something about looking out in the same direction appeals to us, but we’d never sit on the same side of a booth if we were alone.
You’ve got to trust your people. It is the best way to keep your business humming along and your stress levels below the max.
How long after you move from a place should you stop claiming it? I’ve been out of the Midwest for a baker’s dozen years. Am I still Midwestern? I’ve been here in California for the past 11. Should I claim to be Californian? Does the duration even matter or is it more about how you relate to a place?
The trailer for the Lego documentary we chatted about is below. I was able to sit in a collaborative education share with the team at Lego when I was working for a large corporation. The lego team brought a lot to the table, much more than our company, and I was left with a healthy respect for their business methods. Any entrepreneur or burgeoning entrepreneur would benefit from learning more about their growth, marketing, and corporate culture.
