Right Quick Roasters is a new business. Christopher Owens and Doug Meils are the entire staff. They do all the jobs. They are the head roasters and the human resources department. They are marketing, administration, operations, customer service, packaging, delivery, design, and every level in between.

This happens when you start a business. Your resume says one thing, but the reality is much more complex. At least in Christopher and Doug’s case, they’ve already done most of those jobs, and they have each other to depend on.

When partnerships work, the heights that can be achieved are much greater than one person can scale alone. See Bill Gates and Steve Wozniak starting Microsoft. When partnerships stop working, the fallout is much greater too. See Bill Gates and Steve Wozniak at Microsoft.

Partners often depend on each other’s skills. More than that, they depend on each other to be honest and push each other to do more than might be comfortable.

Christopher and Doug specifically address these value ads in today’s podcast. They have different skills, yes, but more than that, they acknowledge that they are both still learning and growing. They leave room for each other to share, be vulnerable, and bring ideas—good or bad—to the table, knowing that it is in service of making their coffee effort better.

NOT FROM THE SHOW

  • In this episode, I mentioned a growing envy for Christopher and Doug’s partnership. I really appreciate the value of collaboration. You may have heard me reference a business partnership I was a part of that failed. Coincidentally, I was blogging about the start-up experience and keeping a semi-consistent journal.

If you’re interested in learning more about the impact caused by one business partnership not surviving, you can read the journals—which were not edited for grammar at the time—on LinkedIn. Here are two posts that deal specifically with me discovering my business partner was leaving the business and another on how that impacted me.

  • Roast! Industry Partner Camp Coffee Company has a loyalty program. It’s not new but it feels like a good time to remind you. Lots of coffee roasters offer some sort loyalty rewards, and for as much coffee as you drink, you should definitely be maxing them out. At Camp, the rewards range from free coffee and food to merch.
