Roast! West Coast Classics Volume 6

Do brewing and drinking vessels impact the flavor of our coffee?

R!WC is on a quasi-holiday until Season 4 drops in February 2022, but I didn’t feel right leaving you completely coffee content free. This is the last throwback classics episode before we jump into S4 which is exciting. I’ll be interviewing great coffee professionals from California, Oregon, and Alaska beginning with Dani Riggins, founder of Ultreya Coffee and Tea in San Diego.

I have a favorite coffee mug. I’m reticent to show it because it may not be the one people expect. If you follow @roastwestcoast on Instagram you may have already seen it. I don’t know why humans seem to connect emotionally with the cup that holds our coffee or tea or favorite drinks but many of us do.

Whatever your mug is made of–ceramic, glass, clay, stainless steel, enamel-coated tin–it will impact the flavor of your favorite drink through heat transfer, texture, or even the taste of the materials. I enjoyed revisiting this episode because it reminded me to take at least one sip of my coffee with intention and awareness. I encourage you to do the same.

FROM THE SHOW

  • My Wife and I have passed that anniversary. We’ve now made it 19 years together. We have had a lot of coffees together.

NOT FROM THE SHOW

  • Oceanside, California’s Conference and Visitors Bureau shares the City’s Coffee Trail. Essentially, it is an interactive map that guides you to all of the communities coffee spots. You’ll see one of this shows Industry Partners (and favorite spots), Camp Coffee Company near the top of the map and featured on the page.

  • I don’t even really want to draw attention to this list because because lists on the internet are just one opinion which has likely been created without a lot of local experiences. I’m going to anyway. Full disclosure: I’ve lived in five cities–New York, Pittsburgh, Chicago, LA, San Diego–on this list and I disagree with the ranking for all of them!

Foder’s Travel put together this list of “The Best U.S. Cities for Coffee Lovers.” There are five West Coast cities in their top 22 which is already incredibly low but they also short us by counting all of San Diego and LA counties as ONE city! Try telling that to the Oceansiders following the Coffee Trail above.

Nice photo of our coffee smarter expert Siri’s employer Lofty Coffee’s Carlsbad location included.

  • A new roaster focused on micro-lot coffees from Mexico is setting up shop in San Diego-proper. Details about Flor & Seed found in Eater-San Diego.

ROAST! INDUSTRY PARTNERS

  • Leap Coffee is serving an iced butterscotch latte. So…yeah…I’ll see you in line.

  • Camp Coffee Company has made price changes to their menu and changes to their loyalty program. Click below for details:
