There are many reasons for coffee shows to be serious, but that isn’t the role in which Shlurp sees itself existing. Their goal is to have more fun, create relatable Gen-Z coffee snobbery adjacent content, and maintain an underlying sense of the positive. Mixed in with some sarcasm, of course. All that is enough of a reason to create a podcast. The greater good is to create an excuse for two friends to spend an hour together, which is the true genesis of the Shlurp podcast.
Putting out content week after week is challenging. There are a lot of logistics. Try scheduling a weekly dinner with a friend; you’ll see how quickly things can go off the calendar’s rails. Add in a dash of family, a pinch of a career, and the siren song of coffee shops that need to be visited, and you’ll start to see the creative snowball Joe and Jeremy have pushed up to the edge of the hill. Will they survive? Will they thrive? Who knows? For now, the accomplishment is in the idea and seeing it to fruition, week after week.
KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THE PODCAST
Joe’s first intro was going to the coffee shop with Mom and Dad. The space and the environment of the cafe drew him in first. The actual coffee came later.
Jeremy got a job as a barista in a desperate cash grab, but his first spiritual coffee moment came while traveling with his family in Iceland when an Ethiopia natural with flavor notes of fruit and strawberry actually tasted like strawberries.
They welcome the feedback but maybe lay off dissing the audio. They’re working on it. Send them funny coffee videos, preferably on Instagram: @jeremymakescoffee & @joekleeee.
Roast! West Coast has received much support over the 12 seasons we’ve been creating this show. In the beginning, our first-season guests took a chance by spending their time chatting with me. Then, a few offered support, which we turned into a microphone and headphones. With a bit more support, we made a trip to Coffee Fest and made some new friends, including the team Roastar, who has been the Coffee People presenting sponsor for quite some time. The list of supporters who’ve helped R!WC survive (and sometimes thrive!) is lengthy and distinguished.
I’ve tried to pay it forward by uplifting the stories of coffee people and supporting other small businesses with our efforts whenever possible. For the first time, we’re able to offer support for an up-and-coming podcast effort. The community of coffee often opens its arms to one more coffee venture. I hope the same rings true in this media space where we want to support Joe and Jeremy’s efforts with Shlurp. I think it is time for a coffee break.Editor’s note: Do Jeremy and Ryan understand the Midwest? No, yeah…no, they don’t.
