A close up of the reflection of pine trees in the top of a cup of coffee sitting on a stump.

I love having a cup of coffee at camp. There is something about the smell of wilderness, be it pine or mist or desert. I enjoy lighting the camp stove, waiting for the water, and slowly grinding a cup of coffee. My wife is usually still asleep, so I try to be as quiet as possible.

While waiting the four minutes for my coffee to brew in the French press, I’ll listen to the morning birds chattering away. I’ll soak in the smells of the forest. I’ll close my eyes and relish the reprieve from my cell phone, which stays on airplane mode until we head for home.

The coffee is good. It is always good as long as I’m at camp. Sometimes it is great.

FROM THE SHOW

  1. It is true that Renato Bialetti was interred in an oversized Moka pot. His father invented the coffee brewer, but Renato had long been the face of the brand. It is a caricature of him that can be found on the side of every pot.

  2. I couldn’t find the Swedish egg coffee drink that used the egg white as a binder only, but I did find plenty of egg coffee recipes attributed to the Swedes, including this one shared by Real Good Coffee Co. in Seattle, WA:

How to make egg coffee:

  1. In a saucepan, bring your 8 cups of water to a boil.

  2. While you wait for the water to boil, get a bowl and mix coffee grounds with the raw egg. Some people leave the eggshells, too; It gives the coffee a very distinctive flavor. It’s gonna be filtered anyway, so don’t worry.

  3. Turn down the heat once the water is boiling and pour the coffee and egg mix into the hot water. Once it’s all there, turn the heat up again and let the mix boil for 2 to 5 minutes.

  4. Remove from the heat source and pour one cup of cold water over the mix (this is to help loose coffee settle and float down).

  5. Let sit for 5 or 10 minutes; the longer it sits, the stronger the brew.

  6. Pour into a decanter or coffee pot using a sieve or a paper filter to prevent any grounds or eggshells from sneaking into your drink.
