EDITOR'S NOTE: Follow Coffee Smarter on your preferred podcast platform, like, perhaps, Apple Podcasts or Spotify.
Erick has had an eclectic path through coffee. His experience in the cafes and roasteries has lent itself to his new role supporting roasters with Cropster. In this first episode, we chat about their original Roast software designed to track data during the roasting process.
The program allows roasters to create systemic roasting plans by taking data points from the roasting machine during the roast to create a profile that can be replicated. It’s a step beyond writing down roast notes on a pad of paper.*
I didn’t realize before this chat how long Cropster has been around. It was founded in 2008 by co-founders Andreas Idl, Norbert Niederhauser, and Martin Wiesinger. They’ve come a long way from the first Roast software to offer a suite of tools for roasters, cafe owners, farmers, production, and more. They’ve expanded into 30+ countries and become a B-Corp.*
Beyond the expanded Cropster offerings, it was recently announced that European investment firm Verdanne has taken a majority stake in the company. Read more about the investment here.

* I quite like a pad of paper for the brainstorming phase, but I have to admit, it can be a struggle to find the notes that I’ve written on pocket pads lying about the house.
COFFEE WITH NICK FROM ROASTAR
Roastar’s Specialty Coffee Ambassador Nick Schmitt popped out to San Diego for a visit during the SD Coffee Festival. We met up at the new Coffee Cycle Roasting spot in Ocean Beach and then were able to cruise up the coast to visit some of my favorite haunts, including Little Joy in Del Mar, Necessity in Encinitas, and Steady State in Carlsbad. Nick was my first connection at Roastar and, dare I say, friend. It’s good to see him expanding his role in specialty coffee. It’s where he’s meant to be! Follow @coffeewithnick on Instagram to keep up with Nick's progress in the coffee world.
