Roast! West Coast is on the road this month. So far, we’ve camped, and we’ve coffee’d in Utah and Colorado. Already we’ve had quite a bit of excitement, including a chipmunk interrupting this episode, a long rain storm inspiring some First Light Whiskey and Coffee Cycle Roasting coffee cocktails, and a more than a great visit to Durango Coffee Company. I had an excellent Kenya light roast drip, and my wife doubled down on two Nutella lattes.

The first leg of this trip is pretty fast-paced. I planned with portable pour-over coffees from Libra Coffee and Marea Coffee. I’ve also had Steady State’s version in the past. These outdoor-inspired coffees have been pretty enjoyable. I still prefer a fresh ground pour-over or French press, but I can’t argue with the convenience. The Momentum version from Marea is my favorite so far.

FROM THE SHOW

  • The little ball in the Guinness Draft can does NOT have nitrogen in it. The nitro is already added to the can. The widget (as the ball is called) is actually just a piece of plastic with a hole in it. When you open the can, the pressure change creates a chemical reaction that forces the beer through that little hole creating the fizzy bubbles that create that unique, creamy head. I learned more about the process on the How Stuff Works website. You can read that here.
