Cascara - The dried husks of coffee cherry skins that have been pulped and left to dry. Sometimes blended with hot water to make a tea-like beverage. The flavors of cascara are not the same as coffee. According to Atlas Coffee Club, the flavors found in a cascara tea can be “rosehip, hibiscus, and mango with some notes of tobacco.”
If you are interested in trying a cascara tea, ask your local coffee roaster where you can find the best products locally, and don’t confuse cascara with cascara sagrada, which is an herbal supplement that is readily available to help you maintain regular bowel movements.Check out The Bean Journal!
COFFEE VOCAB
Chaff - the collection of dried coffee bean skin or parchment that flakes away during the roasting process.
Peaberry - a coffee bean that developed inside of the cherry as a single see and not with a partner bean to press against. Without the pressure inside the cherry, the bean develops an oval shape without the more common flat side.
I drew this diagram of a coffee cherry with a peaberry inside for myself while talking to Chris. I’m not planning on giving up this podcast to become a full-time artist anytime soon.
