The study, which included individuals from Europe, North America, and Asia, says that “maximal benefits” are achieved with three cups of coffee a day, Sprudge noted. And while many would appreciate a couple extra years of life, those years are likely to be healthier, too. As Newsweek reported, the review found that studies relate regular moderate coffee drinking with a decreased risk of many age-related diseases, including heart and lung disease, stroke, some cancers, and dementia, among others.

  • Considering our recent interview with Jenny Barber about Talitha Coffee’s acquisition business plan for growth, this article in Perfect Daily Grind caught my eye. PDG interviewed Benjamin Hohlmann, founder of Kaffeemacher, Bram de Hoog, founder of Paso Paso Coffee, and Andreas Idl, CEO and co-founder of Cropster about industry consolidation and acquisitions.

  • For the second year running, Ox Coffee General Manager Chris Dennis (and former Coffee People guest) has advanced from the regional to the national level for the US Coffee Championships in the 'Coffee in Good Spirits' category. He competed at the regional level in Kansas City, Missouri last month securing one of nine available spots in the United States.

  • Once an elf, now a hottie: A brief history of Santa Claus (NPR) - This one isn’t about coffee, but I did watch several holiday movies recently where most of the characters got a glow up. Yes. One of those movies was Hot Frosty. That’s on me.

  • The ODEKO Drink Calculator is designed to help cafe’s determine the cost and margin of the drinks they’re pushing over the counter. The calculator offers a speedy resource accounting for base costs, labor, and additives multiplied by the desired margin.

I asked two local cafe owners for their thoughts. The first said, it was too basic to meet their needs, because there were so many more factors to account for. The second said it was great as a quick resource, and they’d probably use it to create first drafts of menus, but that it needed more product options.

  • Read on the Mill City blog. Our friend Bryant Banker-Scannell wrote an interesting post on scaling roast profiles from a smaller roaster to a larger one for the Mill City blog recently.

One of the most common questions we get from roasters scaling to a larger machine is, “How do I transfer my small batch profile to a new and larger roaster?” The immediate thought is that it will be a 1:1 transfer. Unfortunately, that’s not entirely true. • Bryant Banker-Scannell
