The inspiration for the name First Light Whiskey comes from the surf report. It is a reference to the very first rays of sunlight that dance across the waves. They represent the start of a new day and of a new adventure. Being out there early will enable you to catch the best waves. You’ll know in your heart that you’re seizing the day, but it isn’t for everyone.

Some days the waves will be choppy. Some days you’ll wake up sore and tired. The reefs are sharp, and the rocks are not welcoming. Some days it will be cold, and your bed will be so cozy. Hell, you don’t really know what’s down there on any given morning. It is a risky proposition. The reward for getting up anyway are mornings with perfect overhead lefts, communing with dolphins, and sharing hot coffee on the cliff after experiencing a true moment in nature.

A core tenet of the First Light Whiskey ethos is: Embrace the Unknown. Entrepreneurs face a never-ending string of challenges. Some are big, and some are small, but the rewards are great. The journey requires fortitude and a willingness to wake up each day and choose to paddle out.

Enjoy Part 1 of this interview with the First Light Whiskey co-CEOs. Part 2 will drop early next week.

  • Coffee pods are convenient as hell, but there is no way around the waste they produce. Claims of biodegradability are questionable, and the process often requires commercial-grade composting machines. The Swiss company Migros is attempting to create a less wasteful alternative. They’ve just launched the Coffee Ball.

Per SustainableBrands.com, “The compressed Coffee Balls are encased in a tasteless, colorless, seaweed-based coating that gives it structure and protects it from flavor loss — completely eliminating the need for traditional capsule casing…
…The thin, plant-based protective cover isn’t consumed and remains on the ball of used coffee after brewing. The whole Coffee Ball—casing and coffee—is fully garden compostable (the company says they decompose into valuable humus within four weeks). In contrast, biodegradable capsules are still made of plastic — which can take months, if not years, to fully decompose.”

The Coffee Ball isn’t available in the United States…yet.
