Roast! - Jen Byard, Communal Coffee Company

"This is the best job in the world."

Guest: Jen Byard, Founder of Communal

Of all the interviews that I’ve done on the Roast! West Coast coffee podcast, this conversation with Jen Byard is the first where I felt my motivations for starting businesses were directly aligned with the interviewee. Even the words she used to describe why she’s passionate about her company are the words I would have used—collaboration, spaces to create, teamwork, and community.

Jen’s Communal locations were each developed to offer something needed in their locations. The neighborhoods influenced the design, menus, and marketplace as she tried to figure out what needs she could fill while block letters and a clean design aesthetic created a throughline between the businesses. They are definitely not cookie-cutter, but they are also very clearly Communal.

A long shot inside a coffee and wine bar. On the left a waist high counter top features a La Marazocco espresso machine behind a pot of pastel flowers, a man in a grey hoodie signs his check near the register, in the distance and to the left customers sip coffees or type on computers at low round tables. The ceiling is split in two by a long skylight and potted plants hang from the ceiling or overhang their pots on interspersed shelves.
Inside Communal’s Oceanside location.

What’s new at Communal: All three Communal locations have launched new Summer Menus and extended hours. They stay open late, until 9:00 PM Sun - Thurs and 10pm Sat -Sun in Oceanside. Go for the coffee. Stay for the Happy Hour (4:00-6:00 PM) at Oceanside and North Park. More details at the links to the website and social media above.
