“Anytime somebody is trying to make their world better, I’m all-in.”

Netty Taylor, RayJen Coffee LLC

I left the conversation with Netty inspired–inspired to try something new. I’ve started drinking more espresso and coffee drinks in addition to my standard black batch-brewed cup of joe.

I also left the conversation thinking about my personal interaction with the internet. I’ve since been motivated to engage online in a healthier way. For example, I took a month-long news hiatus, and instead of scrolling social media while enjoying my morning coffee, I’ve been reading, um, books.

I’m not prescribing the same to anyone reading this newsletter or listening to the podcast ON THE INTERNET, but I’m fairly excited to find that with a little effort, I can change my habits. Now, if I could only get back on track learning Spanish.*

I find it fascinating when kids follow in the footsteps of their entrepreneurial parents. I think a lot of it has to do with growing up and seeing businesses being built. A kid with enterprising parents goes into the working world knowing it is possible. They’ve seen the rewards and challenges. They’ve been absorbing the experience without realizing it. I also think there is a bit of risk-taking that gets passed down, but I have no research to back that up.

As for Netty, she went out into the world. She followed her passion for motorcycles into a career as a mechanic. The opportunity to join the family business and to live in a community like Bandon, Oregon, inspired her to move to the coast. Her son grew up in the roastery and is now in the business himself. Perhaps his journey will lead him to follow in Netty’s footsteps.

Side note: I love Bandon, Oregon. It was the first place I ever saw a whale despite living in Southern California for the past decade. There is a pod of Orcas that spend their summers feeding in the channel leading out of the harbor instead of continuing south on their migration. The stretch of coastline between Bandon and Newport, OR, is a hotspot for both Orca and Gray whale sightings.

*Also, on the internet with the Duolingo App. The internet isn’t bad, but like any relationship, it helps to maintain balance. If you are online, you can shop for RayJen Coffee or support the brand by snagging some of their new merch here:

FROM THE SHOW

  • Rainforest Alliance: In addition to working on climate solutions and environmental protections, the RA is focused on developing sustainable agriculture, protecting human rights in rural areas, preventing child labor, improving working conditions, and increasing prosperity in the rural communities that engage with forests.

From the organization, “We envision a world where people and nature thrive in harmony. The Rainforest Alliance is creating a more sustainable world by using social and market forces to protect nature and improve the lives of farmers and forest communities.”

  • Breve: a breve is an espresso drink similar to a latte, but instead of milk, a breve is topped with steamed half and half and a layer of milk foam. Half and half has more fat than milk, which leads to a thicker, creamier, coffee drink. The breve is comprised of equal parts espresso and steamed half and half, and is an Americanized version of the traditional Italian latte.
