Bonus Episode: Michael Barthmus, Sivetz Roasting Machines

What was old is new again.

S7:E1 - HOLIDAY BONUS EPISODE

Preferred coffee drink: Americano

Thanks for checking into the R!WC newsletter. I hope this finds you enjoying a mug of coffee while wearing cozy pants and watching a fire, or campfire, or a video of a fire on your favorite streaming platform. That’s what I’m doing over the holidays.

I’m also traveling and taking advantage of the trip to explore new coffee shops and roasters across the west. Shout out to Cygnus Coffee Bus and Copeka Coffee in Palisade, CO, for the great morning cups of coffee today.

This bonus episode of the R!WC podcast features Michael Barthmus, Owner and CEO of Sivetz Coffee Roasters. At least, that is what he’s doing now. He previously owned and operated Doppio Coffee in Hood River, OR.

That cafe is still open, but Michael wanted to step back from the day-to-day grind that comes with running a retail operation. Like many entrepreneurs, he decided to do something just as, if not much more, challenging in the revitalization of the Sivetz Roasting Machine company.

Thanks for listening to the show, and if you’re able, take a moment to relax this holiday with a cup of coffee.

FLUID BED ROASTERS

Fluid bed coffee roasters, like Sivetz Roasting Machines, use a bed of hot air to heat a batch of coffee beans. The beans are rotated by the forced air allowing for all sides of the bean to be roasted evenly.

The heat from the roaster is transferred directly to the bean from the hot air. This is different from a drum roaster, in which beans are heated by both hot air and direct contact with the heated drum (conduction and convection heat).

The Sivetz SRM15 is the first new roaster to come out under Michael’s ownership and with the steadying hand of engineer Bob Oldfather. It expands on the original roasters that were in production by enhancing the design and user experience and by updating the technology for a new generation of roasters. The current roaster has built-in roasting software, but it is also compatible with the expansive programs available currently (see below).

Up next for Sivetz is improving the company’s sustainability and developing a larger 30-kilogram roaster to meet the demand for larger roasting operations. What’s up next for Michael? I hope it is a pint from pFriem Brewing and a nap in front of the fireplace.

A MINOR LIST OF CURRENT COFFEE ROASTING SOFTWARE

In addition to monitoring your roast profiles, today’s coffee business software is often inclusive of all aspects of the business, from tracking inventory to creating a database of cupping notes and much more. Cropster and Artisan are the two most commonly mentioned on the podcast.

  • Cropster - “Cropster helps you monitor and manage every part of your roastery, doing the busy work you don't have time for. Track your green coffee with automatic inventory adjustments and easily stay on top of cupping notes, production plans, production volumes, roast profiles, run out dates, and traceability.”

  • Artisan - “Artisan is an open-source software that helps coffee roasters record, analyze, and control roast profiles. This software can automate the creation of roasting metrics to help make decisions that influence the final coffee flavor.”

  • RoastLog - “RoastLog suite of tools streamlines the coffee roasting process. From green coffee inventory organization and sample management, to roast profile and cupping notes, RoastLog semessly unites the roast production process.”
