“I don’t want to have cruddy decaf either. It’s like, why bother?”
Carol Blanchett
We could do decaf! Eric and Carol had that lightbulb moment during a roaster training course. Their motto—Coffee is for everyone. Caffeine isn’t.—came later.
Chatting with the Blanchetts is fun. They occasionally finish each other’s thoughts and have clearly thought about how their relationship and business intertwine. Despite having differing coffee origin stories, they found a gap in the coffee market where they could thrive. At Talking Crow Coffee Roasters, they focus on specialty decaffeinated coffee. Decaf that tastes good and is roasted with care.
Caffeine is only one potential component of the coffee experience. Some coffee varietals are naturally less caffeinated than others. Robusta is significantly more caffeinated than Arabica, but Arabica is the common varietal associated with specialty coffee. Laurina is a specialty Arabica coffee prized for having only a third or even half as much caffeine as a more traditional bean. It’s often described as having a delicate flavor profile and can be hard to find.
How coffee is brewed also makes a difference. A single shot of espresso has less caffeine than a drip coffee or, for that matter, a chocolate bar.
Coffee is an experience. Where you fall on the spectrum of that experience is a place unique to you. If you find yourself seeking out a cup of craft decaf coffee, Talking Crow is catering to you. For those of you needing a little kick in your cup, they’ve got you covered there too. There will be no chants of Death before Decaf! here.
FROM THE SHOW
Eric and Carol learned how to roast by taking courses with the Specialty Coffee Association. Check out their roasting classes here.
According to the National Kidney Foundation, a new study is supporting the theory that drinking coffee can help prevent kidney stones.
“Our findings show that going from, for example, one cup a day to 1.5 cups per day, reduces the risk of kidney stones by 40 percent,” said co-author of the study, Susanna C. Larsson, PhD, Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm. “Our findings strongly suggest that regular coffee consumption reduces the risk of kidney stone formation.”The Swiss Water process of removing caffeination from green coffee explained by Swiss Water:
