“It’s coffee for everyone. Coffee that everyone is going to enjoy. A nice, solid, cup.” Kayte Wetherington

Welcome to limbo.

I wrote that in my notepad while chatting with Kayte and Tom, Founders of Luckie Coffee. I might have written it because their coffee shop isn’t open yet. They’ll be getting the keys in June 2022. I might have written it because we were talking about the pandemic. I may have written it because I was thinking about some of my own entrepreneurial efforts that seem stuck in a holding pattern.

When I asked them about the emotional impact of waiting on their brick and mortar location, they both laughed. It is one of the steps that most people forget about when they decide to open a business. The waiting step when you wait for keys, permits, contractors, financing, and the list goes on.

Hurry up and wait, I think the saying goes. It is applies to most of hospitality. Open the doors and wait for the customers to come—usually, all at once in a short burst. Recover. Wait again.

It can be a bit of an emotional roller-coaster. It helps to have a partner that can commiserate. Tom and Kayte are business partners in Luckie Coffee and also partners in life.

Partners in work. Partners in life.

“14m25s Let’s start a business that is pandemic proof,” said tom. An entire generation will have pandemics in their head as a risk when starting a business. Will that restrain entrepreneurship or encourage better business planning?

They radiate positivity. I want to be less cynical and more focused on how lucky i am!

FROM THE SHOW

NOT FROM THE SHOW

  • I got a Coffee Sock. It’s essentially a cotton V60—they have other filter shapes and sizes—that replaces a paper filter. I’ve used it twice so far. Once successfully.

Two triangle shaped cloth coffee filters lying on a wooden cutting board. They are flat and the box they came in with the label "Coffee Sock" is at the top of the image.

My initial thoughts pre-use were that I appreciate the reusability of the product. The company suggests the socks will last about 500 uses before being worn out. That’s a plus for sustainability. However, you have to rinse it out well after every use meaning more water usage. That’s a con for sustainability. The packaging has no plastic, and the company is based out of Austin, TX, meaning—unlike most of the paper filters I’ve purchased—it wasn’t shipped from overseas. Both are pluses for sustainability.

The first times I’ve used it, the water drained way too fast. There were some warnings about the brew time on their website, so that wasn’t entirely surprising. I think with some trial and error, it will get better. I’ll post a full recap of the Coffee Sock sometime before the end of Season 4.
